6 Best Ski Resorts Near Denver

First opened in 1940, Winter Park is the longest continually operating resort in the state—and despite its growth over the years, it still manages to feel like a locals’ mountain. The resort now boasts more than 3,080 acres of skiable terrain, more than 1,200 of which is off-piste. With two distinct ski areas (Winter Park and Mary Jane), tree skiing galore, and a smattering of lodges and waffle cabins for a midday pick-me-up, Winter Park is a favorite among locals and out-of-towners alike. The resort guarantees a pre-Thanksgiving opening and “the most consistent snow season after season.” For 360 degree views, take the Panoramic Express up to the top of the mountain and ski down the resort’s longest, nearly five-mile, run.

Where to eat and drink: Tabernash Tavern serves up steaks, seafood, and more in an Old West, laid-back setting about 10 minutes down the road from the ski area. Deno’s Mountain Bistro has both an award-winning wine list and locals’ favorite wings— alongside pasta, pizza, and steaks. Both Indian and French cuisine are on the menu at Namaste India, where you can order an elk curry with mushroom risotto among other more classic dishes.

Where to stay: For a stay that’s simultaneously luxe and rugged, try Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort and Spa, just 15 minutes from the slopes on 6,500 acres of pristine Rocky Mountain wilderness. A consistent winner in our Readers’ Choice Awards, Devil’s Thumb is complete with a geothermal warmed pool and hot tub, complimentary daily yoga, and a rustic spa. Or, stay closer to the slopes in an elevated, retro-style cabin at the A-Frame Club, where you can unwind after a long day outdoors in a hot tub or sauna.
