7 Countries You Didn’t Know Use the US Dollar

It can be daunting to travel abroad and deal with different currencies and fluctuating exchange rates. It’s okay; the universal truth is that math is hard. But there are some places around the world that take the US dollar (USD) for one reason or another, making it that much easier for American travelers to visit. But of course, not every place which can take the dollar does so easily.

For instance, regular Condé Nast Traveler contributor Todd Plummer cautions that while USD can technically be used in Canada, your mileage may vary. “Most retailers will treat the dollar on par with Canadian Dollars (CAD), and will give you any change, if any, in CAD,” Plummer says. “But considering the exchange rate has been hovering around $1.35 to $1.38 for the last few years, you’re much better off getting some CAD cash before your trip, or using a credit card—especially one with no foreign transaction fees.”

For travelers interested in getting the best value for their dollar, becoming familiar with destinations that easily accept it is a useful first step. From contributing writers to Condé Nast Traveler’s Top Travel Specialists, I spoke with destination experts about the best places to use the US dollar. Here is a list of countries where your dollar is as good as—if not better than—it is at home.
