An ‘Outer Banks’ Tour of the Carolinas

Tell me about JJ’s house, which becomes the new “Poguelandia” this season. How did you pick each of the character’s homes to begin with? You must have done a lot of fun real estate scouting.

It’s so much fun to scout different different homes to fit different characters. It’s like real estate shopping—you’re getting paid to go look around at different houses. It’s awesome. It’s fantastic. Now, you know, in Season 4 they all now live together right in JJ’s house in their world of Poguelandia, so we blend it all together. But yeah, I get a really good understanding of the homes in Charleston from scouting so much for sure.

Finding JJ’s house, that’s a good question. When we look for the wealthy homes, those can be easy to find. But one of the more challenging things to find are these shacks or more downtrodden homes that are falling apart, but are also in beautiful locations. So when we found the property where JJ’s house is, there was something special about that property. It’s a large piece of private land and we worked it out quite well with the owner, and we were able to film there. But it’s a great piece of land. It’s beautiful, and it just checks all the boxes. It was actually one of the options for the Chateau—remember John B’s house that burned down Season 3? We were looking at a few options for that right before the show started back in 2019, and so we looked at a number of really awesome houses that had that type of vibe. JJ’s house was one of them.

A lot of the show is filmed on the water, how does that change your job? What’s been your favorite beach or body of water to shoot at and why?

Whenever you get out on the sand it adds logistical challenges. With the water and the tide, everything becomes a little more challenging. You’re dealing with sunlight issues and tidal issues, and then wind issues. So anytime you’re exposed like that, it adds a few extra layers of complications.

As for my favorite spots, I have quite a few. But if I had to pick, I’d say JJ’s house. Yeah, Pouglandia—that’s my favorite. I mean, it’s just always pretty. It’s always beautiful. There’s no beach access but you can swim in the water from the dock. It’s a beautiful place to swim, I tried to go a couple times. If you swim you have to swim at high tide. If it’s too low then the oysters will poke you in the toes. But there are dolphins out there. It’s a beautiful place to be. Every time we’re at Poguelandia filming there, everybody’s having a good time.
