Palace on Wheels—India’s Most Luxurious Train Journey—Just Got a Redesign

It’s good to be king for a day, and it’s even better if it’s onboard the Palace on Wheels, India’s first luxury and heritage train which continues to charm travelers since its launch in 1982. The luxe locomotive, decked in imperial finery, has long been a time portal back to a world of maharajas wearing bejeweled aigrettes and drinking out of crystal goblets. This train is so beloved that it came in first place in a ranking of Condé Nast Traveler readers’ favorite rail journeys in the world for this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

Its 14 air-conditioned coaches, each named after the princely states of Rajputana such as Bundi, Dholpur, and Jodhpur, include 39 deluxe and two super-deluxe cabins. In all its rooms, modern amenities are elevated with Rajasthani gilt and decorative touches with royal-style upholstery and furniture. Guests have access to dining spaces, lounges, business areas, and wellness zones, ensuring a journey of modern comforts in a regal setting. Two restaurants, Maharaja and Maharani, offer top-notch international fine-dining and authentic Indian fare, complete with personalized butler service.

Beginning in New Delhi, the train’s eight-day journey winds past the pink Old City of Jaipur, the blue houses of Jodhpur, and the shimmering lakes of Udaipur. Special experiences such as the wildlife safari in Ranthambore National Park and birdwatching sessions at Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Agra are part of the voyage.
