The Most Searched Destinations of 2024, According to Google

The annual Google Year in Search was just released, chronicling the major sports, news, and pop culture trends of 2024. With over 8.5 billion searches per day, Google is privy to heaps of data on what people are looking for on the internet—including the top trending travel destinations of 2024.

Published on December 10, 2024, the Google Year in Search report ranks the top “trending” searches from this year, meaning the queries that had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2024 compared to 2023. For travel, those results reflect the destinations that have seen a surge in recent interest over the past year, a useful data point to keep in mind while planning your trip (whether you’re hoping to avoid the crowds or join them).

According to US search data shared with Condé Nast Traveler, the top trending query for travel destinations in 2024 are the Gili Islands in Indonesia. The pristine archipelago made up of three small islands—Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air—is located off the coast of Lombok, Bali’s more laidback next-door neighbor.

Three US cities also made the top 10 list: Washington DC, Miami, and Asheville, a bustling North Carolina mountain town with a rich art and food scene that’s currently recovering from Hurricane Helene. Banff, another mountain destination in Canada‘s Alberta province, came in sixth place.

Netherlands’ capital Amsterdam was the only European city that made the shortlist for US searches, supporting the trend of travelers flocking to cooler destinations in Europe amidst rising temperatures and growing summer crowds in Southern Europe.

The rest of the top 10 rankings went to island escapes, including American Samoa, a US territory that includes seven South Pacific islands and atolls near Fiji; the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwest Africa, Portugal’s the Azores; and Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean.

In addition to the top overall destinations, Google shared the most searched-for babymoon and honeymoon destinations, solo vacations, and national parks that are officially trending in 2024.
